So how do you build a trail?
Hello all,
This is the first post in what I hope will be many.
It's great being a mountain biker in the Peak District. We've got loads of natural trails that challenge the rider. Massive hills and thrilling downhills, it's a top place to ride. And the scenery is stunning.
However it still bugs me that we don't have a dedicated trail centre. Many have tried to do something but with so many obstacles it's proven impossible. Now that hasn't stopped me dreaming. Over the last year I've been introduced to the fab natural trails of Matlock by my friend Matt Petch. This led me to questioning who owns some of the land. If you're a keen mtber, you'll be used to going 'Oo! That could be made into a killer trail!' I found out that the Forestry Commission owns a fare bit. This got me excited as they're already keen on mtb trails having them in many of their big forests such as Sherwood Pines and Cannock Chase.
To cut a boring story short, I've emailed them, they replied, said 'Yes, we'd be interested but you're gonna have to bring a private proposal to the table.'
So here I am at day zero. I've never built a trail, I have no idea as to how to start one but I do know it's bloody hard work!
First things first, Speak to someone who knows. I got in touch with Mark Swinnerton of Swinnerton Cycles at Cannock Chase, he was instrumental in setting that up and it's one of my fave places to ride. He has kindly offered to see me on Thursday so I can ask him HOW??
If you have any ideas, tips, money or willing to provide tools, labour, machines or skills for free, get in touch.
I'll be posting again after I've spoken to Mark.
